Heroes and exacto's!

Quinny isn't walking yet, but he ate scrambled eggs (cut up with a fork) and LOVED them!  He even had hot dogs this weekend (cut up super small too).  He likes eating finger foods so much I can't wait to give him more :)  Although it's very messy and he loves manderin oranges in a cup the best, which is super sticky everywhere.    He's also been doing this "duck lip" thing with his mouth lately, it cracks me up!  I thought he was puckering up for a kiss, but I think he does it when he's thinking or mad that I didn't let him do something.   Funny boy!

I did a little photo shoot since the weather was so nice on Sunday, some of them turned out pretty cute:

Ronin had a bit of an accident on Saturday evening.  He was helping daddy clean the garage or polish rocks or something and he got into a box of something and we heard him crying and he was running toward us saying "Daddy, this isn't one of your tools, is it?!" and there was blood all over his hand.  He had found an exacto knife with the cap on and when he tugged to pull the cap off it sliced two of his fingers.  Poor guy, I ran him to the bathroom to run his hand under water and then Rory helped pour peroxide and put bandaids on.  He'll be fine, but it freaked us all out.  One is a little deeper but it should heal fine.  So now the garage is off limits until we get everything put in it's place in a tote or on the work bench.

I took Ronin to the "Spirits Halloween" store this last week too.  He was a little freaked out... but we were looking for ideas and to see if there was any "mad scientist" things we could get for his birthday party in Febraury... there weren't.  And he proceeded to tell me how the store kind of creeped him out even after we got home. haha

He doesn't look that scared... does he? haha

"Complimentary Child Care Service"

On Sunday Ronin had his first run!  It was called "Hope for Heroes" which benefited the Ronan Wilson foundation and Childrens Cancer. It was at the Pearson Airfield in Vancouver.  He and Sean got a number, a tshirt, a medal and a free snow cone at the end!  They ran maybe a quarter of a mile in a big loop.  Ronin stopped about 3/4 of the way and decided to smell a flower... and then he finally remembered he was supposed to be running and continued to run the rest of the way.  He was SO proud of himself when he got his medal.  :)  They had a blast doing it, it was so cute!

So proud of his medal!

Enjoying his snow cone :)

Other than that not a whole lot went on this weekend.  We are getting excited for Halloween and this year Ronin wants to be a vampire.  I'm not sure what Quinny will be yet...  but I get dibs on his candy collection!

Lots of love,

Graham Crackers!

Quinny ate his first graham cracker last weekend at Nana and Papa's house!  He did so well I cooked him up some carrots the other night and cut them up for him to eat and he loved it!  He got it all over his face, but he got some in his mouth too!

Last Friday Quinn had his eye appointment with an eye therapist.  The doctor did all kids of things to see what was going on with Quinn's eyes and why they weren't aligning correctly.  He concluded that the eye that is crossing his nose is actually the "seeing" eye to see what's on the other side...  where we usually use the eye on the side that we are looking to see, his opposite eye is doing the looking...  The muscles are strong but the signal the brain is giving them is confused, so we agreed to glasses that will block his eyes from seeing over the middle of his nose - to see something on the right he'll have to move his (both) eyes to the right.  He is very hopeful that this will correct his eye problems and offered that if it didn't work it wasn't too late to get the surgery a few years from now.  When I asked him about loss of vision in one eye with surgery compared to therapy he did say that with the surgery more likely than not the child will eventually lose complete vision in one eye.  With the therapy there isn't the chance to atrophy since you have to use both eyes in therapy...  so with fingers crossed we are hoping to see him in new glasses soon!   I really hope we don't ever have to have eye surgery - I can't bare the thought of anyone cutting into either of the boys :(

Over the weekend we got to see Nana and Papa and go to a Huey Lewis concert with Jan and Rod.  Ronin didn't want to leave and said he'd miss Tina too much.  Poor kid.  And his sugar high lasted the rest of the day and maybe even into the following day... thanks Nana for all the sugar. haha

Monday Rory stayed home and I worked half the day so we got to spend a little more time with the boys and I rearranged/cleaned their rooms :)

Next weekend Ronin has his first "run"!  It's a short fun-run for kids at the Air Museum in Vancouver.  He'll get a medal and a tshirt for participating and the money goes to Childrens Cancer.

Til next week,

Road Trip & Eye Surgery

Quinny went to the eye doctor on August 28th to see about his eyes crossing.  She looked again at his head bobbing and eyes rotating and said it was good we got the MRI and it was all clear so it's something he'll grow out of (which we already knew).  But his eyes crossing is another problem and it's definitely gotten worse.  His condition is called Stabismus and her solution was eye surgery to lengthen/shorten the eye muscles to make the eyes point straight again.  He is all signed up for surgery on October 31st.    But after talking to some people at work who have kids with eye problems and after researching the surgery a bit on the internet I made an appointment with an eye therapist (not Kaiser paid) on Friday to explore a second opinion/option.  It seems that the reason his eyes point in two different directions is because his brain is only sending a signal to one eye at a time - so the surgery will correct the direction his eyes face, but not the signal the brain sends, and will ultimately still result in vision loss in one eye.   We are trying to keep our options open but we really want to give him the chance to see with both eyes, not just one for the rest of his life...   if the eye therapist says there's nothing therapy can do for him then the surgery will have to do, but I'm hoping that eye therapy will be able to fix the signal from the brain to the eye which will utimately fix the direction his eyes point.

Meanwhile - we got to go on a family Road Trip last week!  Our first night we spent at Lake Billy Chinook camping, the boys did awesome and Quinn only woke up once to eat and to get warm again.  The water was still a little cold so Ronin didn't want to swim in it, but Quinny is a brave baby and really wanted to get in and charged the waves like a little bull. :)

The next day we went to Prineville and stayed at a Best Western so we could use the swimming pool and have free breakfast :)   The boys loved the pool and we loved free waffles and biscuits and gravy in the morning...   After that we went on an excursion looking for "thunder eggs" (rocks) for Rory and Ronin... after much traveling around the forest roads we found a free site to dig so they got to fill up a bucket of thunder eggs-- but on our way back out the car broke down and wouldn't go back up the hill.  We tried for 2 hours to rock the car, push it, dig it out, give it traction... but nothing seemed to make the wheels spin.   Luckily we had cell phone service so at about 5pm I called for a tow truck, and finally found someone willing to come find us because he was "sorta" familiar with the forest area.   At 7pm he said he was on his way.  At 9:45 I called to see if he was still on his way and his secretary said he lost phone service and she'd radio him -- luckily she did because he was lost in the forest too... after a lot of discussing which map to go by they all figured out where he was and where we were and at 1AM he finally found us!  The kids were asleep in the car for most of it.  At 2am we were able to get the last hotel room at the Best Western again.  $400 tow truck bill later...  we are very lucky we had cell service out there since it was a 5 mile hike back out to a main road...   Ronin and I did get to see some big bear tracks and when he drew in his travel journal he drew a tow truck because that's what he remembered the most I guess.

After our tow-truck adventure we bagged the idea of driving to Crater Lake and stayed in Redmond instead where Rory's manager friend got us a hotel room at the Sleep Inn for $39 a night... which made it cheaper than camping plus we got free breakfast every morning :)  The first day we went to Petersons Rock Garden, which was actually pretty cool.  Everything was made out of rocks and there were peacocks everywhere.

Godzilla!

The next day we went to a family fun center to play games and do some bowling in Redmond...

And we visited a chocolate factory "Goody's"

Ronin got his picture on a tank...

We left Saturday morning and made it home just after lunch. Ronin begged to see his friend Sean, so we had him come spend the night.  They were so excited to play in Ronins new fort in the backyard- I had to give them flashlights and bring them popcorn and banana bread out there... haha

The fort is mostly finished- we are going to add a porch with a slide coming off one side and zip-line off the other eventually. :)

Quinny is almost ready to walk, he's been pushing things around so he can walk behind them.  I give him a couple of weeks before he takes his first steps!  Ronin didn't walk until he was 13 months, I thought I had more time!  Quinn is 10 months old today and just about ready to walk.  Scary!

Quinn practice-walking!

That's about it for our vacation and events!

Lots of Love,
